ROI Calculator Explained: A Beginner's Guide

Return on Investment (ROI) tells you how much profit you earned relative to what you spent. Hemiley’s free ROI Calculator makes the math instant so you can compare campaigns, projects, and purchases with confidence.

What is ROI?

ROI is typically calculated as (Net Profit ÷ Cost of Investment) × 100. A higher percentage means a better return for the money you put in.

It is one of the simplest ways to compare options — for example, two marketing campaigns or two equipment purchases.

How beginners should use an ROI calculator

Enter the amount you invested and the gain (or final value) you received. The calculator returns your ROI percentage and related figures so you do not need a spreadsheet.

Use the same time period when comparing projects. A 20% return in one month is very different from 20% over a year.

Make smarter decisions

ROI alone is not the full story — also consider risk, time, and cash flow. Still, it is an excellent first filter before you dig deeper.

Try a few scenarios with different costs and returns to see which option wins before you commit budget.
